THE LAW
You must have a valid licence which can be any of the following:-
A provisional licence with moped entitlement Category 'P' for 16 year olds
A provisional licence with motorcycle entitlement Category 'A'
Full Car licence this automatically provides provisional motorcycle entitlement.
To ride a motorcycle you must be 17 or over.
From 1st January 1997 you must have successfully completed Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) before you can ride on the road as a learner.
You must also have passed the Theory test before going on to take your full motorcycle licence (this applies to full car licence holders from 1st Feburay 2001).
There are 4 part 2 licence schemes available:-
A1 Light
A Standard
or if you are over 21
Direct Access
Accelerated Access
CBT
As required by Government legislation you must successfully attain CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) before you are allowed to ride a motorcycle up to 125cc on the road as learner. If you fail your first attempt all further tuition is *FREE* until you reach the required standard, there will be a charge of £60 for bike hire and insurance.
When you have successfully completed your CBT you will be issued with a DL196 Certificate of Completion which will be valid for 2 years. You should keep this certificate with your licence as this is proof and validates your licence to ride on the road with 'L' plates displayed.
